Hawaii….. famous for its tropical splendour, beautiful sunsets and palm trees, the clear blue ocean and the kiss of the sun on your skin. The smiles of the locals carry a sense of serenity and inner peace. How does it get better than that? And what would it take to bring more peace into our daily lives when we’re not in that setting?
Why Having Inner Peace is Important
To bring inner peace into your life does not just impact your mental and emotional health and well-being, it can also improve the lives of all of those around you.
By keeping calm and staying positive, we can really transform our thought systems into one of greater self-worth and inner peace.
The act of forgiving, loving and having gratitude for ourselves and others can really allow us to let go of negative states. By carrying this negativity, we drain our energy and can potentially cause illness and disease.
Letting go can help us to reboot our energy and allow for greater positive changes to manifest in our lives.
So how can we bring more peace into our lives and the lives of others? Perhaps we can learn how to do this from the ancient Hawaiians’ spiritual ritual of Ho’oponopono.
What is Ho’oponopono?
The healing prayer of Ho’oponopono, (pronounced Ho – oh – po – no – Po – no) is based on the ancient Huna practice of forgiveness, which has been practiced for centuries.
The Hawaiian word Ho‘oponopono comes from ho‘o (“to make”) and pono (“right”). By repeating the word ‘pono’, it can be taken mean “doubly right” or being right with both self and others.
Historically, it began when a middle person in a family would be asked to be a mediator, to bring peace between two warring family members.
This mediator would facilitate a reconciliation, allowing each person time to express themselves, to get whatever the issue is off their chests.
The problem would be acknowledged, and when one was ready, the conscious choice would be made to move on, and move forward together—to become Pono, balanced within themselves.
The mere act of forgiving allowed them to cut the feelings that bound them to the grudge and bring more peace to the relationship. In turn, this leads to healing and creating a new connection in a very positive, loving way.
When you become right with others,
you become right with yourself.
After all, holding a grudge is downright exhausting. You can’t walk around feeling positively energized while constantly stewing over being wronged!
Another belief of Ho’oponopono is that we alone are responsible for what kind of energy we bring into our lives. If the only thing we can control is how we respond to situations, the Ho’oponopono prayer is also used to make our whole essence one of more peace and less negativity.
The Ho’oponopono Prayer
One easy way to integrate the beauty of Ho’oponopono and bring more peace into our lives is to recite four loving sentences.
It is a simple chant that is repeated over and over, to release the bad feelings that are locked into your mind and body. For this practice to work effectively, it must be done over a period of time.
How to do it:
Find a comfortable spot where you won’t be disturbed and sit with your eyes closed. Slowly, repeat the following words to yourself, 7 – 8 times.
“I’m sorry,
Please forgive me,
Thank you,
I love you.”
Really feel each phrase as you say it. You can finish by ending it with a few moments of silence to let the message resonate into the Universe and then open your eyes.
The Ho’oponopono Prayer Meanings
Those four simple phrases – some which can be the hardest the say, carry great weight – especially when combined in this special way. Let’s see how their meaning can bring more peace into our lives, and in the lives of others on the receiving end.
- I’m Sorry – This initial step is for our repentance. In saying ‘I’m sorry’, you are acknowledging that you are responsible for the issue in your life and feel remorse that you have enabled this.
- Please Forgive Me – This second step is really about baring your soul to be forgiven. You must really mean it for it to ripple out into the world.
- Thank You – Saying thank you shows that you are acknowledging you have gratitude for everything you have in your life. That can include everything you are now getting from the Universe and your loved ones, right to the other person who just forgave you. Just keep saying thank you.
- I Love You – Love is the most powerful thing to say. The word love fills you with abundance. So, say I love you to life, earth, the air you breathe, your loved ones, yourself, and the house you live in. Even say I love you to your challenges and to your goals. Say it over and over and mean it from your heart.
How Can This Method Bring More Peace In Your Life?
When done over time, Ho’oponopono can sooth your soul, and draws in a freeing sensation.
The act of real forgiveness is so powerful.
It is not about erasing the wrongdoing, or pushing it aside, as that can make it bubble and fester inside of us.
By acknowledging, releasing, and having gratitude for it can truly lift that invisible weight off your shoulders.
Part of the reason why this traditional Hawaiian forgiveness prayer is so powerful is that it requires you to reflect upon your thoughts and take accountability for your actions.
Feeling acknowledged by others is a universal need, so spiritually speaking, in Ho’oponopono, the acknowledgement is done, and it clears your mind.
So, finding it in your heart to forgive someone else, or yourself is one of the most powerful energetic things you can do.
In this way, you are acknowledging love, both for yourself, and others, and bringing more peace into your life.
How Can This Method Bring More Peace to Stressful Situations?
This method can help you bring more peace by taking control of your thinking whenever you are having difficult thoughts that are not serving you.
It’s also a highly effective meditation practice for helping people navigate their hurt feelings or feelings of resentment towards others.
For people who carry a lot of guilt, it’s also an easy way to self -soothe when the going gets tough.
In a way, these four sentences are a soothing lullaby guaranteed to help you grow a source of love and peace within yourself.
How Can I Bring Peace to Myself on A Daily Basis?
To bring inner peace into our lives and the lives of others, try Ho’oponopono daily – make time to meditate just 5-10 minutes a day on those four phrases and see what happens.
You could also play it in the background while working, walking or before falling asleep. Work it in to your daily activities, and before long, you’ll be sending good, loving vibrations your way and then back out into the world.
