Applied or holistic kinesiology (otherwise referred to as kinesiology in this website) is a natural therapy treatment which brings together Eastern and Western theories and cultures in its' practice.
It is very different from traditional kinesiology (otherwise known as human kinetics or the study of human movement), which is in the realm of Exercise Science / Exercise Physiology.
Because the body has an innate ability to heal itself, through kinesiology, we are able to use the client's body as its own biofeedback system to find out what it needs to be able to do this.
Foundations of Kinesiology
Kinesiology has been around since the early 1960’s and came into fruition when a chiropractor discovered that our muscles can be directly mapped with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) meridian pathways.
As a holistic health therapy, kinesiology looks at relationship between the mental, emotional, physical as well as spiritual and energetic parts of our being.

If the outer triangle (mental, physical or emotional aspects of our being) is out of balance, ie. one side is taking up more energy than the other two, then the triangle will become skewed. This in turn can affect the flow of the inner triangle (how our energy supports our body) and also our spiritual practice (refer to Diagram 2).

My Personal Journey: When I was in my second year of business, I was renting a room from another practitioner in their clinic. It was a very unsupportive environment and I started to develop eczema. I know that eczema has always been an indicator of stress for me, however, this time, it wasn't just eczema - it was bordering on psoriasis.
The worse part was, that it was all over my hands and elbows. As a massage therapist, I was so self-conscious and embarrassed and stressed by the experience, that it made me stress out even more, which in turn, made the condition worse.
I had seen the GP and all they could recommend was to take oral corticosteroids and to see a dermatologist. I knew in my heart that this wasn't the right course of action as it was only treating the symptoms and not the cause of the issue.
When I had my first kinesiology session, we talked about the emotional and mental impact of the eczema and also explored why this was occurring.
I was surprised (at the time) to learn that it was related to family expectations of what/who I was supposed to be (I was previously working as a research scientist before choosing a career in natural therapies) and this was so conflicting for me that my body did not know how to process it.
With several more session of kinesiology, and eventually after I removed myself from that environment, the eczema cleared.
From the case study above, we can see that the physical symptoms experienced can affect the ability of someone to work (financial stress). This in turn causes mental anguish which can also impact the person emotionally. By not being able to process the mental or emotional stress of the situation properly, this can exacerbate the physical pain further.
And so, the cycle continues.... (see Diagram 3).

What I didn't realise at the time, was the importance of how the underlying energy of a person is integral to how well the mental, physical and emotional could support itself. With kinesiology to support the body energetically and by removing myself from the toxic environment, my body was able to heal naturally.
Using kinesiology, we can tap into the body’s innate ability to heal itself. Through a technique called muscle monitoring, we can communicate with the body's nervous system to see where the primary cause of the stress is being held or created and help the body to acknowledge and release this stress.
The aim of kinesiology is to bring equilibrium to all aspects of your body so that everything is in balance (Diagram 1). And this starts by addressing the inner foundation of the person - their energy system.
“Kinesiology helps to bring conscious awareness to the unconscious fears, habits or beliefs that are holding you back from the life you truly desire”.
How Can Kinesiology Help Me?
Kinesiology is a therapy that can help you to move forwards and create your desired reality. It can help you to:
- Feel happier, healthier and more positive
- Reduce mental or emotional stress
- Help dissipate physical symptoms of pain or dysfunction
- Be more calm and focussed and productive
- Have better relationships
- Be more productive at work
- Create the business or step you in the career path that you desire and
- Align you more with your life purpose.
Oftentimes, when we experience stress, it may be a result of a past event or trauma which we have interpreted in some way and/or have not been able to process properly.
By not addressing the underlying issue, we then tend to react in a certain way every time we encounter the same or similar experience (repeated behaviour). Until we are able to break this cycle, we will continue to display the same habits, thought and actions.
As a very generalised example - if a person has only experienced bad relationships in the past, they may think that all relationships are supposed to be that way. They might subconsciously seek to replicate that kind of environment, because they don't know that there is an option for them to have a good relationship.
They don't know what that means or what it feels like and if things start to "go right", this can often be unfamiliar and uncomfortable for them and they may self-sabotage so that they end up being back in familiar territory. Even if it's not serving them or their higher purpose.
Through kinesiology, we can communicate with the body's nervous system to see how we can help resolve this stress/trauma/event that's driving that behaviour and create new options of how they can choose to respond in similar situations as they come up in present time or in the future.
By bringing conscious awareness to our subconscious limiters, we can then start to change our habits and behaviours to that which will serve us better.
How Does Kinesiology Work?
It is important to acknowledge that kinesiology does not treat, diagnose or cure any disease. In kinesiology, we are not working within the Western paradigm of "health" and disease.
"Kinesiology does not treat, diagnose or cure any disease."
So what are we doing instead?
Much like in acupuncture, we are working to help balance and support the energy of a person so that they can recuperate from whatever symptoms (outward expressions of disease, stress or pain) they are experiencing in life.
In kinesiology, we believe that "energy comes before matter". And by working to balance the energy of a person directly (the inner triangle in the Model of Universal Principles, Diagram 1), we can help them to effectively and efficiently deal with any physical, emotional or mental issues that are negatively impacting their life.
What Can I Expect From a Kinesiology Session?
Having a session with a kinesiologist, whether it be in person or over the phone can be a very empowering therapy for a client.
We start by taking a detailed case history and talking to the person about what’s going on for them and what it is that they would like to do better or change.
This can be anything - from dealing with phobias, increase sporting performance to making life changing decisions or dealing more effectively with stress or past trauma.
Kinesiology is a tactile therapy and in a clinic session, we will use muscle monitoring to directly communicate with your nervous system to see what the best way to approach the issue would be. Because the body has an innate intelligence on how it needs to heal, every session with every client is completely different.
"If your body has created the issue, it knows what it needs to do to uncreate it."
During the session, you may be required to touch, hold or rub certain locations on your body (positions are related to specific acupuncture points). You might also be asked to do simple exercises like looking in different directions, activating particular muscles or vocalising statements. You may also be required to do some visualisation exercises or breathing techniques to help retrain your nervous system during the session.
The sessions are designed to help balance the energy supporting your body and/or retrain your nervous system to allow you to respond more appropriately to your current stresses (better mental or emotional processing) or create new neural pathways to help you change a habit that is no longer serving you.
How Does A Distant (Phone/Online) Session Work?
You may be wondering, if kinesiology is a tactile therapy, how can it be effective over the phone?
Earlier, I referred to the concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and mentioned working on meridians and meridian pathways. In TCM, there is a concept of life energy or "qi", which is integral to a person’s health and wellbeing. There are many factors which can affect the flow of "qi".
So what is "qi" and how does it affect us?
In TCM, they believe that "qi" flows through the body in specific pathways, called meridians. If for any reason, there is a blockage or under-energy in any one of these pathways, it can affect the entire body system. Likewise, if there is an over-energy in a particular meridian, it can drain the energy from other pathways.
When we work with kinesiology, we are able to balance your body’s energetic field even if you’re not physically present as we work using a proxy or surrogate. The practitioner can do this on your behalf as they are still able to connect with your energy from a distant.
During a phone session, you will still be able to touch, hold or rub certain points on your body as needed. You can also complete the exercises over the phone so that you can start to retrain your nervous system immediately.

Compliments from Clients:

“I was introduced to the practice of kinesiology by Mel and this has opened my eyes to the power of energetic healing.
I was diagnosed with MS a chronic health condition that I am receiving treatment for. It was very important to me that I adopted the natural therapies in order to reduce my medical symptoms and kinesiology is one of the natural therapies that I have found very useful to maintain my emotional health, which had had a direct effect on my physical health.
I have had a lot of positive improvements in my emotional and physical health my menstrual cycle has become more regular my sleep pattern has improved and my stress levels have greatly reduced.
I am able to manage the negative emotions that arise following a visualisation exercise that has made me more able to stop negative emotions over taking me.”
Dianne Morris - Sydney

"Today was the first time I have done Kinesiology and it was done over the phone from Sydney to Melbourne.
Over the phone was amazing…. I really felt the energy lift during my session.
I was open to trying a new methodology to help with my currently low energy due to the pressures of life and its current circumstances.
I help men negotiate life and when I am in sync with assisting my clients I always take part of the negative energy with me when I leave so I am always open to new and remote opportunities to do this.
Keeping my emotions grounded is extremely important in my work and the timing of this session could not have been better due to all of the negativity around the Corona Virus and the need to make important decisions.
If you’re feeling heavy, uncertain about the future or perhaps just frustrated with a situation, I highly recommend contacting Mel”
Scott Carson, Melbourne

"It was one of those magical moments when you listen to your work colleagues and just made an appointment. I don't know how it happened and when it happened... it just happened. I didn't know what to expect but I can now certainly say that is the best it has happened to me.
I wanted to talk about mental health and some related issues I had. With my mental health episodes, it gave me strength to overcome the uncomfortable issues at the time.
It changed me bit by bit and I'm now different to when I first started. I can recommend it to anyone that struggles with mental health and beyond.
I say it's great for resolving emotional problems especially uncertainty and the future. It helps you to see the past the present and the future from a different perspective.
It also even helped my physically by resolving my sore foot!
The results have been great - better than expected. It is not only because of Kinesiology but all because of gifted Mel who brings the best into the practice. She brings lots good energy and that special light that you expect from someone who treats you. She cares about you. She gives you the best words and advice. She know how to tune your energy."
Juliana Martina - Sydney

"Mel’s Kinesiology treatment has been incredible and has eased the post op pain that I’ve endured for months; plus helped clear the carpal tunnel pain in my wrist, arm and shoulder. Thank you Mel!“
Sandra Serra - Sydney

“When I started the seeing Melanie, I was feeling stuck. I was professionally frustrated, creatively blocked, and my gut had been unwell for over a year.
After seeking help from several professionals who I felt could only see one piece of the puzzle, I was ready for a holistic approach.
I didn’t know what to expect in our first session, but by the end of our time I was convinced that this approach somehow worked.
Mel made me feel comfortable by answering questions and explaining the process as we went. I was amazed by the details she could intuit about my life, my health and career.
The results for each session were immediate, ranging from something as simple as feeling more grounded and thus prepared to make major decisions, to being so creatively inspired that I couldn’t fall asleep for hours!
Although each session focused on a different aspect of my life and followed a different process, they have all tied together holistically.
With Mel’s guidance, I am pleased to say I have felt grounded enough to find a new job, creatively inspired, and have seen my primary stomach symptoms disappear.
I would recommend kinesiology to anyone who is open to exploring things they may not understand, and believes in an integrated approach to their physical, mental, and emotional self.”
